Rachel Stanton

Working intuitively in layers with watercolour, mixed media and oil, Rachel often begins with a remembered moment of weather, movement or light rather than a fixed composition. Each painting develops through gestural marks, washes, texture, removal and response. Her practice occupies the space between discipline and fluidity: an understanding of materials and process provides the structure from which she can work freely and instinctively.

Many of Rachel’s paintings are created later in the studio from memories gathered while walking. Expansive skies, shifting tides, spring storms, fading light and the elemental energy of the coast are absorbed and reimagined through colour and mark. Forms are concealed and revealed as the work evolves, creating atmospheric paintings that invite the viewer to pause, look closely and feel the landscape rather than simply observe it.

After first studying art more than two decades ago, Rachel returned to creative practice during a period of personal healing. She later completed her art studies with distinction, developing a deeply personal visual language concerned with resilience, transformation, connection and the quiet strength found within the natural world.

From her Appledore studio, Rachel creates original paintings, limited-edition prints, sketch studies and art cards. She also offers expressive watercolour and mixed-media tuition, private studio sessions and guided Coast Path Sketch Walks.
