Since the first lockdown began in March 2020, we have all been more attentive to our immediate surroundings.
Something has also happened to the perception of time, which has made painting with oil on canvas seem to fit the rhythm of the days.
I live by the River Exe, and the River, which is always present, has found its way into my paintings.
I am reminded of an observation made by the anthropologist Michael Taussig. He wrote:
‘To make an image is to release a spirit.’
