Creative North Devon – A Crucible of Creativity

An exhibition telling the story of the Barnstaple School of Art during the Arts and Crafts period is now open on our Community Gallery.

“A Crucible of Creativity” is curated by Naomi Ayre, Librarian of the North Devon Athenaeum. It shines a light on the school which, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, trained many significant artists and makers in the district.

The exhibition is a Creative North Devon project and includes images, original documents and examples of work made by students and teachers at the School of Art, including the internationally significant architect and teacher William Richard Lethaby and the weaver and dyer Ethel Mairet.

Creative North Devon is a partnership between the Museum, North Devon Athenaeum and South West Heritage Trust.
